Concussion Care in Cambridge
A concussion is a serious injury that can include a range of physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms that can lead to longer-term problems if not properly addressed.
What Causes a Concussion?
This type of traumatic brain injury can be caused by a blow to the head or, in many cases, by the rapid acceleration or deceleration of the head, as with a whiplash injury. Clients may be surprised to learn they have a concussion since they didn’t hit their head on anything.
Symptoms
There are a wide range of symptoms associated with this type of injury. The physical symptoms often include dizziness, imbalance, difficulty moving, nausea, and headaches. Cognitive symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, lack of focus, confusion, and memory problems are also common.
Emotional symptoms are also associated with concussion and may include irritability, depression, and anxiety.
Symptoms often last for a few days to a few weeks, but it’s not uncommon for symptoms to last considerably longer.
Our Approach
Concussion physiotherapy is a natural approach to help clients return to normal activities. We begin with a thorough assessment, which includes a comprehensive concussion and vestibular evaluation examination of the vestibular, vision, and proprioceptive systems.
A cervical (neck) examination is done to determine if a neck injury contributes to the symptoms and perpetuates headaches. Based on our exam findings, we will tailor a care program to help address your symptoms and expedite recovery. This may include customized exercises and recommendations for participating in or modifying school, work, and home activities.
Specific exercises and manual therapies are often effective in addressing physical symptoms and restoring balance and coordination.
We also offer cognitive therapy to help address cognitive symptoms, improve memory, and clear up confusion.
