GLA:D™ Osteoarthritis Care in Cambridge
For people with osteoarthritis, Helios Physiotherapy and Rehab offers an evidence-based program that was developed in Denmark and has shown remarkable results.
What Is It?
The program is an eight-week program of education and exercise to help reduce pain, reduce the need for pain relievers, improve mobility and activity levels, and help clients get back to enjoying life. For many clients, the program has helped them postpone or even avoid the need for joint replacement surgery.
The program consists of three parts:
1. Education: The first component is two 90-minute education sessions to teach participants about osteoarthritis, current treatment options, how to self-manage your symptoms, how exercise can help, and how to adapt to the difficulties of daily activities.
2. Exercise: The second component gets you moving! You will participate in two 60-minute exercise sessions per week for six weeks. Generally, these are group classes; however, in some cases, individual classes may be offered.
These neuromuscular exercise sessions are led by our certified therapist and are designed to help you:
- Control your movements and posture
- Build muscle strength through functional exercises
- Apply these exercises in your daily activities
3. Data Collection: The third component is monitoring your progress. We will measure your progress 3 and 12 months after starting the program, using your first visit data as a baseline. This monitoring gives you an objective picture of your improvement and allows us to improve the program.
Who Is It For?
The program is designed for people with pain or limited mobility resulting from knee and/or hip osteoarthritis. To determine if the GLA:D program is right for you, we will perform a physical assessment along with some functional tests. If you’re a good candidate for the program, we will get you scheduled for your education sessions.
If GLA:D isn’t right for you, our dedicated team of physiotherapists, chiropractors, and other therapists will work with you to create a care plan to help improve your symptoms.
