TENS in Cambridge
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation:
- Transcutaneous: Means through the skin.
- Electrical: TENS machines deliver small electrical pulses to the body via electrodes placed on the skin. TENS machines block the gateway of pain signals which are sent to the brain.
- Nerve: Pain signals reach the brain via nerves and the spinal cord.
- Stimulation: If pain signals can be blocked by the tiny electrical shocks from the TENS machine, then the brain will receive fewer signals from the source of the pain.
TENS units may help treat the following symptoms:
- Period pain
- Labor pain
- Postoperative pain
- Neck and back pain
- Osteoarthritis
They may also alleviate pain that results from the following conditions:
- Endometriosis
- Arthritis
- Sports injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Fibromyalgia
- Spinal cord injury
- Painful diabetic neuropathy
A TENS unit has controls that allow people to administer an appropriate level of pain relief. People can achieve this by altering the aspects of the electrical current.
